A whole year . . . !

Gosh, my last post in this blog was nine months ago, and the one before it all the back to last January! I need to do something about that.

Happy New Year everybody! Welcome to 2009.

In December, it seemed as if New Year's Day 2008 had been just a couple of months back. To me, 2008 seemed like the shortest year on record -- but nothing to cheer about.

So 2008 wasn't a very good year. Now that we have said goodbye to 2008, we can look forward to a great year in 2009. Let's make it so!

Only if Bush signs the monument declaration!

Have a great hike to Forbidden Island. I would love to join you but need to spend the day with the family -- and the hike won't work for the whole gang.

You are right, Angelo, that 2008 had some high lights, such as passage of federal legislation that ultimately will put an end to the CNMI's dysfunctional labor and immigration system. But such high points were, unfortunately, just single steps on a very rocky path forward.

And the local political "leadership" continues to be, at best, paralyzed with inertia, moribund, frozen in the paradigms of the past -- unable to apprehend any of the manifold opportunities in the present situation or perhaps even perceive the path of transition to the future.

In terms of the U.S. Presidential election, however, it was a fabulous year!
